Have you ever come across the term 'glass ceiling'?

The glass ceiling is a metaphor for the invisible barriers that prevent women, non-males, and minorities from growing or getting the best jobs within their industries.

This doesn't mean that there are discriminatory policies (although that also happens sometimes); it's more like an unwritten code.

Often it's a psychological bias against hiring or promoting women or non-males. Research shows both male and female managers are twice as likely to hire men over women or others.

The glass ceiling is also reflected in the minuscule percentage of women leaders. There are just a handful of women like Indra Nooyi, Simone Tata, and Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw. Where are the rest?
